The Aluvihara is a monastery carved into a series of caves. It is picturesquely situated amongst rocks that have fallen from a mountain valley above. Legend states that a giant habited the region and used three rocks as a foundation for his cooking pot. Aluvihara means 'ash monastery'and the name is in reference to the many ashes that were produced from the meals that the giant prepared. The first cave is home to a ten meter Buddha who is in a reclining position. Lotus pattern murals decorate the cave ceiling.Another cave is decorated to represent the various realms of hell, a not so pleasaent warning for all those who deviate from the righteous and enlightened path. There is also a flight of stairs leading to the summit of the rock bluff. Once reaching the top you can behold breathtaking, panoramic views of the valleys in the region. The Matale Heritage Centre is roughly two kilometers north of Matale. It is a laid-back arts and crafts centre inspired by the unique traditions of the surrounding region. The Sri Muthumariamman Temple is a most beautiful and interesting Hindu Temple. It is located between the rivers Cauvery and Kollidam. Legend has it that a chieftan of Manalur, situated between two main rivers, begged a goddess to protect his residents from an intense monsoon flood. The floods receded and the residents were spared from untold havoc and suffering. Therefore, the temple was built as a sign of gratitude for protecting the small town of Manalur.
